Dreams of Kohinoor come true
River erosion washed out the home of
Mr. Khorshed Alam a day laborerand made shelter less in his native
village of Gajaria,
Munshigonj. He came to
Dhaka
in 1990 in search of work and survival of his five members' family. He
failed to manage a good work to feed his family. Finding no other
alternative, he started selling vegetables to earn livelihood. With
his very little income he could neither send his kids to school nor
could provide enough food and clothes to his family members.
Kohinoor Akther, Agarbati maker, the eldest child of the family
discovered herself totally illiterate when she was 11 and also
realized that it was toughto survive. She had a strong desire for
education but found out no opportunity. One day she came to know about
UCEP
School from her neighbor who was also studied in there. She convinced
her parents and enrolled in
UCEP
Tamijuddin School in the grade of preparatory I on June 1996. After
completing grade VIII, she was admitted into the
UCEP
Dhaka Technical School in the Wool Knitting trade of Garments Unit. On
completion of technical education in June 2001, UCEP's EFS section
arranged a job for her in FAR Apparels Ltd. as a Linking Operator.
With a very short time, she developed her skills further and become an
efficient operator. With her good performance in the job, factory
management promoted to the position of Senior Linking Operator with
monthly salary of Taka eight thousand six hundred per month.
Kohinoor's income has created a way out for her family from hard core
of poverty to live better than ever. Her two younger brothers also got
opportunity for education. Her fathers now took a rented shop for his
business. Her immediate younger brother was also graduated from UCEP
School and working in the same factory. The most important indicator
of Kohinoor's family is that her younger brother is a student of a
formal primary School at grade IV. Her family is now living in a
better rented house. She and her family is indebted to UCEP for
fulfilling dream and giving her a life of worth living.
